Barn Show (as seen by Devin Woolf)

Devin next door at Naturalismo took these moody photos of the show before dropping his camera once from atop a hay bale (damage) amidst dance fever, and then once again on rocks (broke) amidst late night tamale snack heat...let's all pray his Canon angels return to him a fixed photo tool so he can continue with his mood catching.

Barn Dance (as drawn by Tim Dutcher)

I intercepted this letter that Tim wrote his sis....an amazing drawing from the dance catalyst himself.

Barning Man

man, the barn show was a real real good time. thanks to everyone for filling the barn with the warmest parts of being human. Blown away.

Applause is due:

to The Center for Land Based Learning/Craig MacNamara for being such incredible, supportive, hardworking hosts. for enjoying sharing their wonderful project, and for committing themselves to such positive work. Unreal...
to Sunday Food and Wine/The Secret Café and all the other cooks for preparing such a fully considered, completely delicious, and totally inspiring dinner. Expect many excellent things to come from this crew of friends...
to the small army of friends who sweat over the fire pit, squeezed the heck out of lemons, peeled the frick out of apples, cleaned the spit out of the dishes, carried the hay out of the haybales...
and thanks to all the farmers who contributed produce to the meal...and thanks to Trumer and Magnolia brewery for contributing some amazing brew...and thanks to Bill Niman for helping out with some goats...and thanks to Toby for offering food and flowers directly from his hand worked plot of land...and thanks to Sierra and the friends at Tartine for offering a morning of treats....
and oh, duh, Kyle Field, The Sarees, Karl Blau for opening the gates and sharing such amazing performances, and Jeff and Kelly and Kacey for sculpting the shapes of light in the barn and helping elevate the air....and Sarina and Jamie for DJing the pants off the people.

that's the thing, so many people helped and contributed out of good spirit. The lesson: an evening built on care is an evening where everyone feels cared for...and that's a powerful feeling.

here's a first batch of photos coming from the eyes of hannah, she caught some moments...please pass on yours for flushing out the tale.

Hard Dancing

I'm currently getting ready for some barn dj action, and I'm doing a pretty heavy dance music assessment. it's like my master's thesis in movement...what inspires the hardest dancing?

and what is hard dancing, you might wonder..for that question I can very simply refer you to my friend Opal seen above and very much below, HARD DANCING.

it's free.
that's for sure.

Dear Frank Lyon and I would talk about hard dancing all the time...that's kinda the medium through which we became friends...recognizing in each other the interest in dancing our faces off. Amazingly, two of my favorite hard dancing friends will be in town from the east coast for the Barn Show...Tim and Jamie Dutcher. They are brothers and they started The Boogie Club, something I am thankful to have aligned stars with. it was formative.

and speaking of alignment...the stars have spoken: 2009 is for dancing. get ready, start stretching.

[and if you need further clarification and inspiration on the hard dancing front...please refer back to these videos that Frank posted awhile back of stevie wonder playing music for kids on Sesame Street in the early 70s....nothing could be clearer]

Barn Vision

I've been in deep with some hard barn planning...everything is shaping up to be mighty shapely.  I'm excited.

Despite whole headed barn occupation, I did find a moment to draw some shells and make this poster for the slew of Karl Blau/ Painted Cakes shows that Eli Reitz has orchestrated...if you didn't get a ticket for the barn show, you've got ample opportunities to enjoy Mr. Blau and the Cakes (not to be confused with Cake):

wednesday at the Rickshaw Stop in SF
thursday at Woulds in Oakland (on San Pablo and 59th st)
friday at The Basement in Nevada City
